Since September of 2008 I have begun documenting Jazz in the Pacific Northwest, mainly, Portland, Oregon. I was stunned to find such an incredible wealth of intense and dedicated musicians in one town... and after almost 2 years of not taking one photograph since leaving the Delta, I have once again, enthusiastically, picked up my camera.

It is my hope to capture not only live performances but also the behind the scenes events that help shape jazz culture such as rehearsals & recording sessions as well as document other artists who contribute to the genre like journalists, visual artists, poets, Dj's and more. I want this to be a respectful documentation of Portland's thriving jazz heartbeat. I only wish I could have been here for longer to capture some of the wonderful artists who have already left us. If you would like to suggest someone I should document, please do! Send me an e-mail with any information...as well as if you are someone that would fit into the project, I look forward to hearing from you.

I began adding each session to this page, sometimes up to two slideshows for each night's performance, but as time wore on, the photographs increased exponentially and I have found the need to simplify. I am choosing my favorites from each group and pairing down the number of slideshows listed... My goal has been, since the beginning, to fully document, through photography, the culture that is NW Jazz. In time, I plan to compile these images into a book, complete with stories and quotes from the musicians themselves. Some photos you may not see until they hit the printed page, stay tuned!
